Greetings from Asbury Park:
ENOUGH!  How about a break with this weather? Asbury Park always continues the party even in the worst of climatic interruptions but this is a bit much.  It’s enough to drive you into the warmth of one of our great restaurants, push you inside many of our great shops to pick up some hot merchandise and clothing, or shuffle into the heat at all our unique clubs.  Asbury Park is always warm and welcoming.  Join us!  Only in Asbury Park!

We created an AP piece of history on Wednesday.  We renamed one of our elementary schools in honor of the 44th President of the United States.  The Bangs Avenue Elementary School became the Barack H. Obama Elementary School.  The Asbury Park Board of Education and the Asbury Park School System under the direction of Dr. Denise Lowe hosted a wonderful celebration.  The real kudos goes to all the students at the school who sang, danced and cheered.  The was very very cool and another wonderful Asbury Park community event.  Only in Asbury Park! Truly HUGE!

So how about some sunshine!  It’s that time of year to vote for the Top Ten Beaches in New Jersey.  In 2008, Asbury Park was voted #6 and last year we were #5.  So this week’s homework assignment is to go out and vote and then get all your relatives, classmates, neighbors and friends to also vote for Asbury Park. So, go to www.njtoptenbeaches.org , vote and then pass it on.  Stay tuned!

The rescheduled 2010 Asbury Park Bartender Mix-Off will take this Saturday from 2 to 5 PM in the Grand Arcade at Convention Hall.

Greetings from Asbury Park:
Sorry if this is the second time you received this email.  We are having some techinical difficulties with our mailing list.  Thanks for your understanding.
We are creating a new definition of winter at the Jersey Shore.  As many of you know, I start every day at the beach in Asbury Park.  I have acquired a new appreciation for the color grey.  Snow on the Asbury Park beach paints a beautiful picture and makes one realize what a beautiful piece of the world is right here at our door.  But the weather is playing havoc on our commerce.  This was the third month in a row that our First Saturday event was affected by the weather.  Saturday’s snow and wind storm also put a major dent in our effort s to raise funds for AP’s Haitian Relief efforts.  We are continuing our efforts and will have elephant banks in stores and restaurants for you to make donations.  You can also send in checks payable to APUEZ - Haitian Relief Fund to T. Gilmour, City of Asbury Park, One Municipal Plaza, Asbury Park, NJ 07712.  So we have a homework assignment this week:   Sunday is Valentine’s Day and there is no better place than Asbury Park to find that unique gift for that very special someone in your life.  Our business community needs your support!  Are you “Bought In?”  Why not make a reservation to spend Valentine’s Day in the city and shop the Park, check out our great lodging, and dine at our very romantic restaurants.  Did you know that Asbury Park is also known as “The city of love by the sea.”  Only in Asbury Park!

Hard to believe that a week ago, I was jumping into the ocean at Asbury Park’s Fifth Avenue beach as a participant in the Asbury Park Rotary’s Polar Plunge.  Synergy Productions put together a great video to capture this historic moment and we have placed it on the Asbury Park web site’s home page: www.cityofasburypark.com.   I’m the guy in the orange trunks with the red nose.   Good grins for a great cause!

More Homework:  Revision Theatre needs your help - your vote.  Revision Theatre is in the running for a $50,000 grant request to fund the instillation of a heating and air conditioning system in their proposed new home on Lake Avenue.  They need to finish in the top 10 by Feb 28th.  Please visit and vote at http://www.refresheverything.com/RevisionTheatre.  Vote!

Moonstruck reopens just in time for Valentine’s Day starting with live jazz on Friday featuring the Storeyville Jazz Quartet .

Tony Pallagrosi of Concerts East shared he will be presenting multiple Grammy Award winner/Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee Jeff Beck at the Paramount Theatre on June 15, 2010.  Tickets go on sale Monday.  Check out concertseast.com.  Huge!  Stay tuned!

On Wednesday night, the Asbury Park City Council approved two contracts for our new marketing partners.  M Studio owned  by Jenna Zilincar will be responsible for marketing/advertising, the city’s web site and public relations.  Synergy Productions founded and operated  by Susan Pelligrini  will be responsible for promotional videos, commercials, public access cable production and internet based programming.   I am proud and pleased that both companies are based in Asbury Park.  Stay tuned!

Artist Megan Heath Gilhool will be hosting a Valentine’s Party (art show & sale) on Saturday, Feb 13th from 11 AM to 5 PM at the Market Place, 21 Main Street.  For info call 732.728.9112.

Greetings from ASbury Park:
We had some transmission problems this morning, so I am sending this out a second time.  Sorry if you already got it.

As promised, last Saturday along with 60 other assorted nuts, I jumped into Mother Atlantic at the Fifth Ave. Beach in support of the Asbury Park Rotary’s Polar Plunge to raise funds for Rotary Eye Rescue.  We jumped in the sea so others could see! The temperature was 21? coupled with a wind chill of 2?and the water temperature was 37?.  It was very, very cold!  I raised enough money for the cause to receive a very cool commemorative bathrobe.  Avery special thanks to McLoone’s Asbury Grill who hosted the before and a very welcomed warm after party.  Also an extra special thanks to AP Rotary’s Traudy Grande who organized the whole event.   Will I be back next year?  Stay tuned!  Only in Asbury Park!

And it’s the first Saturday of the month so it must be First Saturday in our Downtown.  February is our annual Mardi Gras celebration and my favorite.  We are calling it “Samedi Gras” which in New Orleanese translates to “let’s get this party started.”  Traditionally held on the Saturday before Mardi Gras, Samedi Gras, or Fat Saturday, ignites the revelers.  As part of the city’s Haitian Relief efforts we will be collecting goods and donations.  Many of the downtown merchants will be running specials and donating part of your purchases to the cause. AP High School students have created an elephants sculpture that will be displayed in the Store at the Shore Toy Store and auctioned off as a fundraiser.  To capture the spirit of New Orleans, the Jersey Shore Jazz & Blues Foundation, the APHS Marching Band and other musicians will bring live music to our shops, restaurants, galleries, and the streets.  Free parking will be available in the Bangs Avenue Garage courtesy of TAKA.  If you would like to send in a check, make it payable to
APUEZ-Haitian Relief Fund and mail it to me at City of Asbury park, One Municipal Plaza, Asbury park, NJ 07712. Visit
www.AsburyParkChamber.com for all the details!  Only in Asbury Park!

February is Black History Month.  The APHS has created another art exhibit that is being displayed in the AP City Hall Lobby.  Under the guidance of Jean Johnson this year’s exhibit is exceptional.  Make sure you schedule some time to check this out.

The Gay Pride Business network that usually meets at Moonstruck will hold their monthly meeting at The Harrison on Wednesday, February 10th, 6 to 8 PM.

Hey Girl!  New group show at Parlor Gallery, 717 Cookman Ave. 732.869.0606.

Greetings from Asbury Park:
First, a big thank you for all of you who brought goods and donated money to Asbury Park’s Haitian Relief effort last weekend.  A group of us met at Langosta Lounge on Tuesday to discuss what we can do to continue our support of all those in need and all those who are stepping up to help.  We all agreed that there will be no quick fixes in Haiti and that outreach support will be needed for many years to come.  We all “bought in.”  Our next coordinated relief efforts will be comingled with our monthly First Saturday event on Feb. 6th.  This will be a wonderful evening to celebrate our city and support all the wonderful reasons we are back.  New Jersey Natural Gas and Pepsi have both offered very generous matching dollars for any funds we raise that evening.  Many of our stores and restaurants will be offering specials that will also support AP’s Haitian Relief.  Stay tuned!  Only in Asbury Park!

Friday night, ArtsCAP presents The Big Lebowski Bowling Tournament, Film and Fundraiser at Asbury Lanes.  Form your own team (four to a team).  The competition starts at 8 PM and the screening will begin at 10 PM.  Go to the back of your closet and dust off that classic bowling shirt.  Special prizes!  Not to be missed.  Only in Asbury Park!

Last night, at the very end of a very long day, my boss and City Manger, Terry Reidy called me into his office to discuss a number of city issues.  We are often “two ships passing in the night” and frequently need to take a timeout to catch up.  After we got the business out of the way, he shared some insights into discussions that are taking place with the continuing development in the city.  “Why do you think people are going to move to Asbury Park” he asked?  I think there are many wonderful reasons and that is the real attraction to the city.  My reason was simple, the people.  There are so many cool people here in the city.  All shapes, sizes, colors and preferences.  I get this great vibe from just being with them.  The city is small enough that you can actually get to know them and befriend them.    I know of no other place like it.  It’s the people!  Only in Asbury Park!

Wishes for a great weekend,
