Weekly Updates
Greetings from Asbury Park:
One very cool characteristic of Asbury Park is it’s ability and spirit to react.  We understand tough times.  Last week’s disaster in Haiti mobilized the city.  Under the leadership of Marilyn Schlossbach and Eve Silver, the city quickly assembled their resources.  Madison Marquette provided space for storage of all the goods that were collected on Monday and offered the Paramount Theatre for an evening of comfort, entertainment, information, and hope.  You are going to see posters for AP’s relief efforts that display an elephant.  The elephant is Haiti’s national animal and symbolizing strength and hope.  We are planning to schedule many more days to collect donations including this Saturday at Convention Hall.  Give and stay tuned!  Only in Asbury Park!

The City of Asbury Park will host “A Musical Celebration of Hope & Peace in Honor of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.”  This free, public event will take place at 2:00PM Saturday, Jan.23, 2010 in the Asbury Park City Council Chambers.  We are pleased and honored to announce: Playwright Kenneth G. Craddox & Actor, Antonious Thigpen will be presenting original works prepared for The City’s celebration. Spoken word artist Tigga & Music by: artists from Bishop’s Kid Gospel Productions, Flat 5 Records & Entertainment and Take Over Syndicate Records &  Entertainment, The Isis Tribe and Hunt Blazin’ will also be featured.  Light Refreshments will be served.  For further information regarding this event, call: 732-502-4528.

BIG BREAKING NEWS:  We just learned that New Jersey Council for the Humanities has selected Asbury Park as one of six sites for a Smithsonian musical heritage display called the Harmonies Exhibit.  In addition, we will be the first of six NJ sites to open the exhibit in April 2011.  Special thanks to Dennis Carroll who wrote the RFP proposal and to Helen Pike, Johna  Karpinski, Bob Stewart and the AP Library staff who assisted.  Now this is HUGE!  Stay tuned!  Only in Asbury Park!

Plan B will host their monthly Shabbat dinner this Friday, Jan. 22nd at 8 PM.  Seating is limited so please call for a reservation at 732.807.4710.

You won’t be getting any tweets from me but I can tell you I will be at tonight’s AP Chamber of Commerce’s monthly business networking event at McLoone’s Supper Club.  The fun starts at 5:30 PM.  The Chamber events have become very popular and our last one sold out.  So call ahead to 732.775.7676 or email Cindi at cindi@AsburyParkChamber.com.  Only in Asbury Park!

The City Council has appointed the following people to the new formed Asbury Park Public Art Committee:  Councilwoman Susan Henderson, Mary Pat Angelini, Marilyn Schlossbach, Patrick Schiavino,  Dawn Von Suskill, Malcolm Navias, Gail Holy, Martin Santomenno and City Manager, Terry Reidy, or his designee.  The committee will be responsible for managing the new AP Mural Arts Program and for developing a process to oversee public art in the city.  Very cool!

The city council also appointed Mike Sadano to the Asbury Park Urban Enterprise Zone Program Board of Directors last night.  Mike is a partner with his wife Nancy Sabino in The Showroom, our great new theater in the downtown.  Congratulations!

And if Marilyn Schlossbach didn’t have enough on her plate, she is opening a new restaurant in the former Mattison Park space.  The new place will be called Trinity and the Pope.  Trinity refers to the cornerstone of Cajun cuisine: bell peppers, onion, and celery and Pope is a culinary term for garlic.  Sounds exciting, and knowing Marilyn, it will be.  She will be teaming up with husband Scott, brother Richard, and building owner Adam Levy.  Stay tuned!  Can’t wait!
